Derivational and Inflectional Morphemes in the Children’s Novel “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

This research is intended to discuss affixation process found in a children’s novel “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The focus of the research is about the types of derivational and inflectional morphemes found in the novel. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Novel entitled The Little Prince was used as the data source. Data were collected by reading and note taking technique. The theory of Katamba and Stonham (2006) was applied to the data analysis Based on the analysis, it was found that many derivational and inflectional morphemes were used to form several words in the novel. The derivational morphemes can be distinguished into derivational morphemes used to form adjective from noun base (-ous and -ful), to form adjective from verb base (-ible, -able, -ful, and -less), to form adverb from adjective base (-ly), to form noun from verb base (-er,-ion, -ment, and -ing ), to form noun from adjective base (-ness), to form verb from adjective base (en- and -able), to form noun from noun base (dis-), to form adjective from adjective base (un- and in-), and to form verb from verb base (re-). The inflectional morphemes found in the novel can be classified into morpheme -es for 3-rd person singular present, -ed for past tense, -ing for progressive, -s for plural marker, -er for comparative degree, and -est for superlative degree. These findings will be useful for those who are interested in studying morphological analysis in English or other languages as a comparison.
